Gender inequality in contemporary American society is visible in the fact that the majority of the poor are women. In a recently released document the United Nations noted that the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women are crucial in that these contribute to the reduction of hunger and poverty, the saving of children’s lives, and the spread of education, among other things.

Right now American society is in the grip of the worst economic downturn the nation has seen in living memory, and the number of Americans going hungry and getting poorer are increasing by the day. This makes the empowerment of women – and education is a major means to achieve this – all the more urgent. President Obama’s administration realizes the urgency of this matter and is willing and ready to offer huge sums of money to America’s women to get themselves well educated for free. Yes, for free!
